Description
Colonia del Sacramento , known in the local environment as Colonia , is the capital of the department of Colonia , in the southwest of Uruguay . It is located in the -left- north bank of the Rio de la Plata , 177 kilometers from Montevideo and off the coast of Buenos Aires , Argentina , from which it is only about 50 kilometers.
It is located on the cape formed by the tips of San Pedro and Santa Rita. His helmet old, the neighborhood historic comprising 12 hectares of the western end of the city, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995 to illustrate the successful fusion of styles Portuguese , Spanish and post-colonial . The plane is of Portuguese origin and contrasts to the standard prescribed by the Spanish law on the West Indies . It is characterized by its narrow streets of stone , highlighting its tradition military .
Its proximity to the city of Buenos Aires strongly linked with it. Numerous travelers arriving and departing to that destination and also the inhabitants of Buenos Aires that have properties in it. There is a project to link both sides through a binational bridge.
