The Plurinational Legislative Assembly , called the National Congress until 2009, is the body that exercises the legislative power of the government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia and is located in La Paz , the seat of government. It is formed by a bicameral assembly , composed of two chambers, the Chamber of Deputies with 130 members and the Chamber of Senators , which consists of 36 senators, 4 for each department of the country. It is the only one with the power to approve and sanction laws that apply to the entire Bolivian territory. The Vice President of the State chairs the Plurinational Legislative Assembly.
The two houses of the Assembly meet in the Legislative Palace located in Plaza Murillo , main square of La Paz. In the Plaza Murillo there is also the presidential palace (known as the Quemado Palace due to the several times that it was tried to destroy it in the 19th century ) and the Cathedral of Our Lady of La Paz.
